Engineered Hardwood Installation in Clyde Hill

We installed about 1,500 square feet of 9-inch wide-plank, wire-brushed European white oak from UT Hardwood in a Clyde Hill home, continuing the existing hardwood into the bedrooms so the new floor matches what was already there. The boards came prefinished and were installed with glue plus nails, the most stable method for wide planks.

The goal

The homeowners already had wide-plank oak in part of the house and wanted the same floor carried into the bedrooms, so the upstairs reads as one continuous floor instead of a patchwork of rooms.

What we did

1. Matched the existing floor. A 9-inch, wire-brushed European white oak with the same character, knots and grain texture as the floor already in the home.
2. Glue plus nails. Wide boards move more with seasonal humidity than narrow strips. Gluing and nailing them holds each plank flat and tight, which is why we use it on wide-plank installs.
3. Prefinished boards. The finish is applied at the factory, so there was no sanding or finish drying on site. Rooms were usable as soon as they were done.
4. Clean transitions. The new boards run through the doorways and along the stair landing without breaks.

The result

A wide-plank white oak floor that runs from the landing into the bedrooms as one continuous surface, with the wire-brushed grain and natural knots giving it a relaxed, lived-in look.
